Images
This week we’re looking at images and the question of how much information an image contains and how much is needed for it to still be understandable. We will explore the path from the real object through a photograph, a simplified drawing to a pictogram. Using selected objects, we will try to simplify the representation step by step until nothing remains. In doing so, we will discuss how much information is necessary and when simplification supports or hinders understanding.
✏️ Levels of Abstraction
Choose an object and develop a series of representations with increasing levels of abstraction:
- 3-dimensional representation
- Photographic representation (color)
- Photographic representation (grayscale)
- Photographic representation (black and white)
- Line drawing
- Illustrative representation
- Simplified representation
- Strongly simplified representation
- Schematic representation
- One geometric shape
You can work with analog or digital tools. The focus is not on technique, but on the decisions you make. Please use a square format (1500 × 1500px) and make sure that the individual stages build on one another and maintain a consistent visual style. Also consider the purpose of each level: When is more detail useful and when is less enough? We will look at and discuss your results together at the beginning of the next session.
